President Donald Trump wants to turn Trump International Golf Club West Palm Beach into a permanent retreat for current and future presidents, regardless of political party.
Harvey Oyer III, an attorney representing the club, presented the proposal to Palm Beach County commissioners Thursday. The plan would designate the property as the “United States Presidential Golf Course,” available to former and sitting presidents as well as visiting foreign heads of state.
The proposal also calls for dedicated presidential lodging at the property.
Under the proposed arrangement, Palm Beach County would continue to own the land and lease it to a federal agency. The golf club would work with the General Services Administration and the Secret Service on the project.
The arrangement would take effect after Trump leaves office, according to the proposal.
Palm Beach County Administrator Joseph Abruzzo said the county is exploring the idea, calling it a potentially “remarkable and historic opportunity.” He compared the project’s possible prestige and economic impact to that of a presidential library.
The Trump family owns the golf club, but the course occupies county-owned land. Trump secured the lease as part of a 1996 settlement with the county related to aircraft noise near his Mar-a-Lago estate.
The proposal has not been approved. It remains subject to review by county commissioners and discussions with federal officials. No financial terms or timeline have been announced.
